In my previous article, I looked at why second-hand clothing is becoming a serious trend and an important part of street style. Now, let’s visit 5 boutiques in Sofia, Bulgaria, which have some of the best pre-loved selections. There, you will find racks with a story, inside cozy interiors. These boutiques don’t peddle clothing – they offer a real shopping experience.
Sophistication and charm are permanent residents at my 5 favorite second-hand stores in Sofia. The people you’ll meet here add charm and color to the street style scene. Each of these lovely nooks has its own style, well-coordinated with the right interior and music. The shop assistants are always ready to pay special attention to you and chat about the fickle moods of fashion. So, even if you’re not into the whole second-hand trend, it’s well worth stopping by some of these boutiques, just to get an extra shot of happiness.

The name is an acronym from the Bulgarian words for “fashion” and “library”. Not only can you buy clothes here, but you can also sell your own stuff, as well as rent outfits. The idea is that instead of filling your closet with pieces you never wear, you can have a diverse selection of garments, for a fraction of the retail price.
Every month, between the 1st-10th, you can bring in the clothes that you have fallen out of love with. Together with the team, you will decide on a price, and then you’ll get to keep 40% of that.
More interestingly, you can rent clothes. While there are some places in Sofia that lend formalwear, Modeteka focuses on casual fashion. You can get a membership for 1, 3, or 6 months and then select 3 garments every time you walk into the shop. There is no limit as to how many times you can switch clothing, within a month.
The boutique’s team shared that they select pieces to match their own tastes, yet strive for diversity, trendiness, and pick clothing that is as good as new.

For 5 years now Maison’s goal has been to offer primarily natural textiles. The team has a soft spot for silk, cashmere, and delicate styles. The idea is to select pieces with an emphasis on strength and femininity. However, uncanny combinations are also encouraged.
Most of the brands you’ll find at this second-hand boutique are French and Scandinavian. While some of the garments carry the spirit of a past era, they are often combined to be on trend.
Maison’s fashion squad wants to send all clients home with a smile. Their goal is to help you style and combine your new garments, rather than just give you another piece to stuff into your closet.
According to the team, who have considered the green perspective as well, one of the best ways to recycle clothes is to reuse them.

They sell: women’s; men’s; accessories
This second-hand shop might be small but it’s full of trendy, casualwear treasures. You won’t find sequined dresses here. Instead, there are cool t-shirts, rompers and everything else that a young, mellow city dweller likes to have in their closet.
At Trash, the vibe is more like the cozy pad of a fashion-forward hipster friend, than a second-hand shop. There is a comfortable couch, the lights are dimmed, and the music is good – everything inspires you to chat and chill, rather than just shop.

They sell: women’s; men’s
The shop is a family project, developed by a brother-sister team. Their goal is to offer choices to the hardcore city dweller, who doesn’t have enough time to find his own second-hand treasures, and would yet like to be well-dressed.
The interior, as well as some of the garments, feature unexpected touches that speak tons about the team’s colorful imagination. At Casual, you will find everyday garments that you can feel comfortable and easy in, yet interesting enough to express your personality.
Adress: ул. Ангел Кънчев №20
They sell: women’s; men’s; accessories; cosmetics
What you notice first is the carefully selected interior. Trendy touches, with sarcastic posters as the focal point. Perhaps it’s the layout and location that make this second-hand corner so international. Lots of fashion-lover tourists stop by as well.
The racks feature a selection of special pieces, such as cashmere sweaters with an interesting cut. You’ll also find some basics and trendy items at Sedgwick.
